What are we growing this year?
Wholly Rooted Farm is a few acres of beautiful land outside of Deerfield, Wisconsin. We use organic and permaculture principles.
Each year we try to grow a bit more and add and expand in a manageable way.
Our plans for 2023:
Add another 60-80 plant types to our medicinal and natives gardens
Grow herbs used in Asian medicine (TCM, Kampo, Hanyak, etc.)
Begin selling dried herbs
Increase our permaculture reclamation in our energy optimization and organization
Integrate fermented plant biological supports and controls in our systems
Add another dozen perennial, cane, bush, and tree fruit
Grow more plants used to collect seeds
Design and implement water systems to help during dry times and to get rainwater catchment into the back acre
Continue to look at options for building an outdoor kitchen that includes open fire cooking and wood fired oven
Plant winecaps to be a part of our woodland medicinal area
Add more raised beds for specific food plants that are eaten by wildlife - and use attractive fencing or deterrents with the beds
Create vertical garden spaces on the greenhouse frames
Work on fountain and seating area garden with aromatic plants
Create a summer kitchen distillation space that is easy to use, without so much setup/breakdown time for hydrosols and education
Add more at-risk native plants from Wisconsin DNR lists to grow and plant into the prairie spaces and woodland spaces
Create summer shaded space on the deck using plants/vertical garden design ideas
Create new garden area as the perennial areas to date have now been filled
Other future plans:
Future: Build a space where people can stay when they come to visit - either an RV, 2-3 season tent on a platform , or a tiny house.
Future: Create solar systems for the greenhouse and add a drying shed for herbs behind the greenhouse that utilizes the hot greenhouse air.
And, more!
