Iris
I love to photograph the Irises as they grow around my farm - Sweet Iris, Iris pallida. They smell amazing - like grapesicles - and are such a beautiful color. They grow all around our lees field and along the woods, and on a breezy day you can smell them from an acre away. Did you know this is the species of Iris that is used in perfumery? The rhizomes of this plant are one of the most luxurious and expensive natural raw materials in the world. They harvest the rhizomes and dry them for 2-5 years, so they have time to develop the irones, the compound that smells powdery, luscious, and earthy/creamy and amazing. One ton of dried rhizomes yields very little orris butter. It is used in perfumery, but in very small quantities. The nickname is blue gold. I do not produce orris butter, but source mine for perfumery from Fraterworks or Eden Botanicals.
