WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR SUPPLIES? All of the products here are made by hand in small batches or individually as custom created blends and products. I use organic ingredients as much as possible, I am conscious to purchase from companies with fair trade or social justice oriented ethics. I use all plant based ingredients and so most products are vegan/vegetarian (my son has severe dairy and mammal allergies). I am an organic herb grower. I grow hundreds of varieties of herbs in multiple gardens that are all grown using organic practices, but they are not certified organic. I dry all of my herbs in my dedicated herbal studio using Excalibur dehydrators.
WHAT IS HERBALISM? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), herbalism is the use of crude plant material such as leaves, flowers, fruit, seed, stems, wood, bark, roots, rhizomes or other plant parts, which may be entire, fragmented or powdered. The term herbalism refers to the long historical use of these medicines to support the healing function of the body.
HOW IS HOLISTIC AROMATHERAPY USED? Using essential oils can be uplifting, calming, soothing, and energizing. Essential oils are composed of many chemical families. Each chemical family has properties it is known for, such as anti-inflammatory, anti fungal, analgesic, rubefacient, CNS sedative, antiviral, antispasmodic, cell proliferate, tonic, vulnerably, and more. By understanding the chemical profiles of the plants and of each essential oil, we can blend lotions, salts, rollerballs, ointments, salves, butters, diffuser combinations and more, to target the specific actions desired based on your needs. The two primary uses you will find are topical and inhaled. All topical application is also inhaled - as we smell the blend on our skin or in our bath - so that is a double bonus! But inhaled is the molecules of the aroma entering our sinuses and then stimulating or calming or impacting our mood via aroma. Inhalation is primarily through diffusing or inhalers. Topical application is when it is used on our skin. Topical application can include massage oils, bath salts, lotions, body butters and more.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO USE TO MAKE MY PRODUCT? Essentials oils all have unique chemical profiles, compositions, and families. Through my aromatherapy training I know the components that are best for each issue, body system, and the safety and contraindications. My herbalism education gives me the knowledge of which plants are best for which issue as well, and I often combine oils I have infused with herbs with the essential oils to create a more potent and effective blend.
DO YOU USE ANY ANIMAL PRODUCTS? I do not use any animal based ingredients, and I always check and double check that carriers and bases are plant based/dairy free, as my own son has severe allergies to all mammals, their meat, and their milk. I do use local Wisconsin beeswax for 1 product, but generally utilize butters and oils to create the consistency desired.
CAN I USE ESSENTIAL OILS ON MY CHILDREN? Kid safe products contain lower % of essential oils than those for adults. There are many oils that are contraindicated for young children, and child safe blends take that into consideration and use what is safe by age group. Extreme caution should be used for children under 3, and great care should be used for children under 5. For an overview of safety of using essential oils with children, please visit http://www.aromaweb.com/articles/aromatherapyforchildren.asp
There are alternatives for children which are applicable and work very well - hydrosols, for example. I always include lower child safe amounts and oils in my child line blends. Please email me with any specific questions if someone has recommended you use essential oils on your babies or young children and you are unsure about safety.
I'M PREGNANT. CAN I USE YOUR BLENDS DURING PREGNANCY? I am trained in safety considerations for pregnancy and breastfeeding. I dilute well, and don't recommend any contraindicated essential oils during pregnancy. I have a wonderful belly butter that I create that does not use any essential oils and is a rich combination of luscious oils and butters - perfect for a growing belly. Always check with a certified aromatherapist before use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or nursing and want to use essential oils, please work with a certified aromatherapist. For a quick overview of essential oils to avoid while pregnant, visit http://www.aromaweb.com/articles/aromatherapyduringpregnancy.asp
DO YOU RECOMMEND ESSENTIAL OIL INGESTION? I will not include the ingestion of essential oils in my recommendations or personal reports. I don't recommend putting essential oils in your water either - as we all know, oil and water don't mix, and you risk mucous membrane damage. Internal use has its place and should always be overseen by an aromatherapist with aromatic medicine certification.
WHAT ARE CARRIER OILS AND INFUSED OILS? WHAT ABOUT BUTTERS? An infused oil is a carrier oil that has been infused with an herb - such as infusing lavender buds, plantain, or comfrey into olive oil. The oil will not only have the aroma of the plant, but will also contain the chemical components that make that plant special. Infusing oils adds additional properties when creating a blend to meet a specific need. Herbs that I personally grow and infuse into oils includes comfrey, calendula, chamomile, lavender, plantain, chickweed, goldenrod, yarrow, and more.
WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY? On the NAHA website, it is defined as " the therapeutic application or the medicinal use of aromatic substances (essential oils) for holistic healing. As the practice of aromatherapy has progressed, over the years, it has adopted a more holistic approach encompassing the whole body, mind and spirit (energy)." ~National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy
AND REMEMBER: Please keep your essential oils and herbal products away from children and pets. Essential oils and infused oils can “go bad” so it is best to store them away from direct sunlight in a cool dark spot.
