About Wholly Rooted Permaculture Farm
Wholly Rooted Farm is a few acres of beautiful land outside of Deerfield, Wisconsin. We moved to this place in September of 2018, and in our first growing season of 2019 we created many medicinal beds, a large food garden, installed 2 orchard spaces, got chickens, and started beehives. In 2019 we expanded our planting areas, started mushroom logs, and created more food beds. In 2020, we added a greenhouse, expanded our bulb and perennial cutting flowers, and added more woodland medicinals. 2021 saw us add raised beds for greens and food we want to keep the deer/voles/groundhogs/skunks out of, as well as additional woodland and shade medicinals. For 2022, we created an enclosed hoop frame for deer and rabbit protection and planted dozens of food and herb plants inside. We also expanded our medicinal herbs, widened all of our annual beds, and planted in at risk medicinals under our trees and along the wooded areas including black cohosh, ramps, goldenseal, true unicorn, and more. For 2023, we have plans to incorporate more raised beds (deer protected), expand rainwater collection, create additional seating and education spaces, and expand our medicinal plants. We are creating an outdoor cooking space. We hope to install a more permanent hydrosol distillation space, so it is easy to just pop the herbs into the still and go without hours of prep and cleanup.
At Wholly Rooted we use organic and permaculture principles. As a white person using the principles of permaculture, I acknowledge that permaculture comes from practices created by indigenous cultures and peoples around the world for thousands of years, and was appropriated by white men in a position of power over the past few decades. I acknowledge I am privileged to own land, and that I am using processes created by indigenous people. To me, the principles of permaculture go beyond food forests and soil building and are principles that can be used to create a more equitable, restorative, and cooperative community. Land AcknowledgementWholly Rooted is on the ancestral lands of the Ho-Chunk in an area that was forcefully ceded in a treaty after the Black Hawk War in 1833. Where we live used to be marshlands, but the Ho-Chunk had villages along the lakes and waterways throughout the area, and our area is rich in sacred effigy mounds built by the ancestors of the Ho-Chunk.
